today i went with an ex-boyfriend to asheville. he was going to see an old g-friend from the past and needed the moral support. actually he was going to see their "child" that they had together (aka an old puppy friend) whom he hadn't seen in years and she was coming down from Maryland with the pup. so we headed up there for a new year's day extravaganza...

well oddly enough, it was he and i and the girl and her new boyfriend, and we got along GREAT!!! we had such a fun day. of course, how can you not have fun in asheville?? considering the circumstances (of boyfriends, girlfriends, ex-boyfriends, ex-girlfriends) we all got along great. no jealousy, just Fabulous conversations and lots of laughs...

but anyways, we went to Mellow Mushroom for lunch....yes i know, i skipped out on mom's new year's dinner. so unless i scarf down some dollars(collard greens), sense(black eyed peas), and health(fatback) here in a few minutes, i might be without all three this year. so anyways, i keep getting off subject....

well when we got back to his house, i just grabbed a mag. and went and had a good read....my buddy is a guitar player, so i had to do something while he tranced out in his jam sesh. and i just so happened to pick up a guitar mag.....

oddly enough, i start flipping through and i find an article on the killers. MY FAVE! so i begin to read....

if you know of the killers, you know of "somebody told me", one of my personal feel-good songs because of the 80s happy golucky beat. that's what's so great about the 80s, it didn't matter what the words were in the song, the music just made you happy!....(kinda like love in an elevator, only just listening to it recently made me truly understand why my mom got mad at me when i sang it around the house)...

well in this article, they were of course bragging on the new breakthrough artists, but yet also a bit skeptical on their so-called achievements referring to the 80s era as a "Cultural Wasteland".

WHAT!?!? STOP THE PRESS!!!

the 80s a cultural wasteland??....i wish i knew the age of this writer. but how can he make such a judgement when the 80s is what shaped us so? especially those of us 25 to 35 where our tender years fell within the 80s era. i would imagine that this writer is around his 30s somewhere, and he constantly referred to his view of the 80s as one that is seen by most everyone. i'm sorry, but most everyone i know is huge fan of the 80s. it was a happy time of fun and colorful clothes and crazy bad hair, but all in good fun, right?

i mean, has this dude even seen the newest fashion abounding in european countries and now making its way to our parts?? yes, 80s!!! i can now purchase a pair of hot pink legwarmers to wear with my white pumps without going to goodwill or the local costume shop.

but the kids in this group actually do not enjoy being called 80s new-wave rock, since their album has a variety of sounds that are not all 80ish...so understandable.

but the writer then gave this as leeway of why he was a fan of the group. i think this writer has forgotten his roots, he needs to look back to what he actually listened to in order to be so musically intelligent to aspire to the journalist of a music magazine. but in conclusion, these are my final thoughts of the 80s era that was NOT a cultural wasteland.....otherwise, how could all of us be so culturally swank? you know you agree!

the 80s. it was a happy decade of great music. everyone i've ever met in my lifetime was a gi-normous 80s fan. i think it is what gave us the true love of music. i mean, HELLO! it is when MTV actually showed music videos, for cryin out loud!!

but those of us who truly loved the 80s are those of us who seek the real music out there....that's not always found on the mainstream radiostation, that's not always topping the charts with rick dees...

well perhaps the killers is found on the mainstream, but i just think they are paying homage to the people that created the love of music within them in the first place...yes the big hair, happy, upbeat, musicians of the 80s.

there i'm done.
