Give me Liberty or Give me Death...

07.03.2003 - 11:54 a.m.

its very common when you are living in such a small town that there's a "commons area" everyone goes, whether you need to be there or not, where you always end up in time of boredom....

in my town - Wal-Mart

*****

i've been two Wal-Mart 3 times in the past 3 days. 1st to get items i really needed, 2nd time to go with my sister, and 3rd time just being lazy walking around i bought some cute leopard undies and socks....?

well if you want to see anybody and everybody, you just head on over to Wal-Mart and peruse for a few minutes. you'll run into someone. yesterday my sis and i were just fumbling around, getting some things for the house and we ran into and old lady friend who goes to our church. she's in her 80s but still a lil' firecracker. she stopped us and we got to talking about dad.

he had his 3rd chemo treatment on tuesday, so he's been a little slumpy lately. after a few moments went by, apparently an old friend of vernie mae's walked by. (vernie mae is her name). she grew up with vernie mae, and they all lived in the same neighborhood when my mom and dad were kids.

this lady also knew my dad had cancer, and began speaking of a friend of her's, jimmy dean.

old lady - "yeah, jimmy dean, is going in for his 1st chemotherapy on friday, he has *cups her hands around her mouth and whispers* cancer."

*****

this action amused me. she spoke freely of the chemo, but still whispered the word "cancer".

its like it is a terrible, audatious thing that must NOT be mutter aloud. almost the "Lord Voldemort" of the muggles world. (Harry Potter)

why is it that we shy away from this word. i must admit that when i first found out that my dad had cancer, i felt awkward saying the word.

i had a subconscious, overwhelming feeling that i should not say it aloud.

just as Lord Voldemort was an evil wizard, that once he placed the mark of death upon you, you did not live...

the same along with this deadly disease, it may place the mark of death upon you or it may set you free...

my question is.. when will our Harry Potter come along? the "ONE" who will stand up to the most deadly and cure this evil and horrible mark of death?

will he ever come along? until then this "mark that should not be named" will stay a scary, mystifying mark that may place death in your midst or give you liberty!
